Celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day

Our children enjoyed lifelong learning in the great outdoors today, in celebration of National Outdoor Classroom Day.

First launched in Australia in 2018 by NaturePlay, and celebrated in Primary Schools and Early Learning Centres nationally, Outdoor Classroom Day reminds teachers that lessons learned outdoors, whether math, science or language-based, often enable children to be more focused, creative and - importantly - have more fun.

"Children who have the freedom to play today — making friends, getting lost in the moment, having fun — are better prepared for whatever tomorrow throws at them. Playing helps children build friendships, test their own boundaries and solve their own problems. It’s central to a child’s development and their enjoyment of childhood," explain the founders of National Outdoor Classroom Day.

At A Step Ahead Clifton Beach in Cairns, early childhood teachers created a 'Follow a Bug' experience.

"It was such an open ended and simple experience but the enthusiasm of the children took us by surprise," says Educational Consultant Jola Sung.

"The way the children described where the bugs were going, what they may have been doing and how they were moving was nothing short of inspiring!"

One of the most moving parts of the outdoor learning experience was discussing with the children the importance of not interrupting the insects," she said.

Among the many Lifelong Learning Centres to celebrate National Outdoor Classroom Day was Papilio Early Learning Ingleburn, where Centre Manager Samantha Cummins and the team created an outdoor art pavilion for children to express themselves in paint and drawing.

"I love these moments where the educators and I intentionally slow down and just enjoy the little things with the children (literally the very little things that I could barely see!)"

The intentional Outdoor Classroom experience was enjoyed so much that the team at A Step Ahead Clifton Beach plan to hold regular events, as they cannot wait another entire year.
